Cleaning Your Bathroom The Natural Way

Natural Cleaning

Bathrooms are kept in optimum condition when cleaned regularly as they receive a lot of traffic, particularly if you have a number of people living in your household. Germs are common in these areas around the toilet, in the shower or bath and in places like your toothbrush holder. Grime and soap scum also builds up in these areas from washing products and natural body oils.

Bathrooms commonly attract mould due to the steam coming from hot water faucets and it is a good idea to have an extractor in the ceiling. To help the extractor, or if you don't have one installed it is good idea to wipe wall and ceiling surfaces down every few weeks or so.

By using the following recipes you can create a clean bathroom using natural ingredients gathered from your kitchen cupboards and the garden.

Tub & Tile Cleaner

 - 1 Cup Baking Soda
 - 1/4 Cup Liquid Castile Soap
 - 2 Vitamin C Tablets (Crushed)
 - 3-5 Drops Eucalyptus or Tea Tree Essential Oil
 - Water

Combine baking soda, castile soap, vitamin C, and essential oil into a plastic bottle. Add water to make a smooth paste. Shake or stir to mix. Apply paste to the surface you want to clean (bathroom tub or tiles) and rub with a damp cloth until the area is clean. Rinse product away.

Soap Scum Remover

 - 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
 - 1 Teaspoon Salt
 - 2 Drops Essential Oil of Your Choice
 - Vinegar

Combine baking soda, salt and essential oil in a small bowl. Add just enough vinegar to make a paste. The vinegar will produce a fizzing action when added to the other ingredients. Apply mix to any areas that have a build up of soap scum such as around taps and soap dishes. Apply with a damp cloth, give a good scrub then wipe product away.

No-Scrub Toilet Bowl Cleaner

 - 1 Cup Borax
 - 1 Cup Vinegar
 - 10 Drops Pine or Lavender Essential Oil
 - 5 Drops Lemon or Lime Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients into a bowl and pour mixture straight into the toilet bowl. Allow to sit overnight. In the morning, flush the toilet and the build up will flush away. This mixture is great for toilets with a build up of grime where the water has been sitting.

Brown Sugar Septic Care (Bacteria Activator)

 - 4 Cups Very Warm Water
 - 4 Cups Brown Sugar
 - 2 Packets Active Dry Yeast

Put the warm water in a bucket and add the sugar. Mix to dissolve. Add the yeast and stir. Set the mixture aside for 15-20 minutes until the yeast reacts with the sugar and the mixture becomes frothy. Flush the mixture down the toilet in portions - do not try to flush all at once.
